The Myth of the Freemarket

Earlier this month I wrote about Human Nature. And for exactly the same reasons we will always need a government, we will never have a freemarket, because the assumption is that a freemarket has a level playing field for everyone trying to enter it.

The rich, or 1%, who control the market, will never let the market be free. The bigger you are, the better positioned you are at frightening off competition and people will go to extraordinary lengths to frighten you out of the market if they perceive you as a threat.

Its always been that way, whether it was one tribe trading with another to the corporate giants trading now.

The 'market' is always problematic in that if you sell something and incur retribution, a la pitchforks, you have no good will left and any future attempt at entering the market will leave you unable to compete. Thus you and your family from now on will starve. I am sure the libertarians think this is a disincentive for people doing things wrong in the first place. But misunderstandings happen. There is a reason corporations pay a fortune to market research corporations to find out the perception of their products in the market place.

So its a free market, all you have sell are lemons that aren't ripe yet. you starve. Libertarians would say you need your community to support you when all you have is unripe lemons. But perhaps you are bad at growing lemons and need to move into another area of expertise. Do the community continue to support you when you can't grow lemons for nuts? Do people finally drop the hint, your lemons suck? Whereas Joe down the road produces plenty of awesome lemons.

For some libertarians the safety net is the community. And perhaps they do build good communities, they may be the only ones to do so. If you belong to the Los Angeles community and want to move to New York. The New York community don't need anymore movie stars and no one wants to give you work in New York... Are you forced to stay in the Los Angeles community then?

How does the New York community organize shipments of almonds from LA? How does LA community trade computers with San Jose community for almonds. Who maintains the road between LA & San Jose?

Markets unregulated by a benevolent government will cause chaos. If our government isn't perceived as being benevolent, then it is time to take the government back and make it work on your behalf again. Contact your state or federal representative today.
