Wheat

I was just noticing another thing telling women what supplements to take for hormonal issues. My advice before taking any of them is first of all try giving up gluten first. Primarily wheat. I gave up gluten for another reason but the immediate impact it had on me was to stop dead all my hormone issues. I stopped having all premenstrual issues immediately. Since then I have pretty much given up all carbohydrates. While I am not diabetic nor have I ever have been, it is a condition I never want to get, but the problems associated with carbohydrates are massive - apparently it is even associated with cancer, dementia, and of course, liver disease, diabetes, heart disease etc etc...
I still eat plenty of veg, like avocados, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, chard, olives, tomatoes.... fruits like berries, pomegranates and some citrus. I also eat a lot of fermented foods like pickles, sauer kraut, kim chi, yogurt...
I regularly have a little piece of no added sugar chocolate. Otherwise sugar but mainly carbohydrates are treat foods relegated to birthdays and special occasions, although thanks giving can be easily kept low carb if you want.

You don't even have to eat a lot of meat to be low carb, we eat a lot of antipasto, bruschetta and and tree nuts too.

Standing

This is technically not about food, but stay with me.

A few years back it was chic for the NYTimes to call out people who sit down too much - it would cause all kinds of things from diabetes to instant death - okay, I exaggerate - slightly. Apparently it is still chic at the NYTimes!

Some of us might be able to stand at our office desk but if you work in some occupation where it is difficult to stand and work such as being a computer programmer, or drive, it makes life difficult to work and stand. There are jobs you have to do sitting down. Although some of us can use exercise balls or other ergonomic seating to alleviate some of the damage to the lower spine. This might help for some of us who can use other options, but you can't pull the seat out of a taxi and use an exercise ball instead.

What I have thought would be better is to be able to squat instead. In a lot of cultures and in many non-western civilizations, and native cultures, they squat rather than sit. In western culture we do NOT squat, it is uncivilized, which I think is the problem. I've been in Asian and squatted and it was felt far better for the hips, pelvis and over-all spine health than sitting ever has.

The problem with squatting is we can lose the ability to do so if our spine, hips and pelvis become too damaged.

Standing is fine but not a complete solution, in my opinion. Unless your spine, hips and pelvis is damaged, then you have to stand.

I don't have anything to prove that squatting is better for long term work other than my own experience. I don't know how squatting compares to sitting on an exercise ball.

BPA

You have probably heard about BPA and how bad it is because it mimics estrogen in our bodies and it has been touted as causing men to become women because estrogen, but more seriously, prostate cancer in men and causing breast cancer in women.

I'd dispute the problem of men and estrogen because men who have the condition of being totally without estrogen are extremely non-violent and I believe are not at all interested in having sex. The hormones that make men men is the ratio of testosterone to estrogen.

I digress.

So anyway, there is a push to only use BPA free plastics for fluids. But now research is showing that plastics that are BPA free also produce an estrogen-like chemical when washed in hot water.

So what do you do? Glass and stainless-steal are the solution - for water use a simple carbon filter - these estrogen like chemicals are so large that a simple carbon filter is all you need to remove most of the BPA - that's fine for water - but what about fruit juice or oils - we only buy oils and juices stored in glass because oils tend to be huge molecules as well, and often bigger than BPA. So many fruits and veg also come in plastic along with most meat. Washing everything before you cook/eat it will remove most of the BPA. And don't drink fluids stored or bought in plastic. Also the insides cans that contain acidic fruits such as tomatoes are often coated with a plastic like substance that dissolves into the fluids stored within.

Chicken then and Now

We've all heard the adage "you are what you eat", and while I sometimes rejoin with the epigram "if you eat vegetables, does it make you are vegetable??", the adage I am told sanctimoniously only applies "to eating fat" but I am not so sure. Obviously the end result of "breeding" chickens for the past, almost, 60 years could very well flow up the food chain. How did they make chickens this big and if chicken is so good for us because it is so lean, why are we so fat?

Sure we are living sedentary lives but we are eating absolutely terrible food. Our food chain is full of hormones that might flow onto human beings which might increase the size of human beings as a result.

This is what you have to wear when you are preparing to spray your crops with Lasso herbicide. Yes this is what they are spraying on the crops of food you are going to eat.

Do you really want to eat food sprayed with this?

What happens to the cans afterwards?

Zucchini

I used to keep goldfish back in Australia some years ago and I would buy them plants for their tank. The goldfish saw these plants as yet another source of food since they are omnivores.

I asked the guy in the pet shop what I should do, other than buy plastic plants to decorate their tank and he recommended putting slices of zucchini in the tank.

So next visit to the supermarket I purchased a zucchini for this purpose and into the tank went what I thought was a nice piece for the fish.

By the next day the water was putrid. The smell was awful and the water went a white cloudy colour. I had to change the water completely, clean out the tank and replace a goldfish.

The next time I visited an organic grocery store, I purchased a zucchini and put a slice into the tank. Everything was fine. Goldfish enjoyed water remained clear and habitable.

I thought about the first repeating the zucchini experiment because I thought perhaps I just got a bad zucchini before damning all zucchini from the supermarket to hell based on one experiment was a bad idea. So I purchased another one from the same supermarket and into the water went a slice and exactly the same deal, the next day the water was putrid again and had to be replaced.

I wondered whether I was just lucky the first time with the organic store and again I repeated that experiment but the water remained fine again after giving the goldfish a piece of zucchini.

Again, this was years ago in Australia.

KFC Mashed Potatoes

In Australia, a number of years ago I bought some KFC and with the chicken came some mashed potatoes which I didn't want so I gave them to my dogs, who loved human food.

So for a treat I thought they would like these and as normal there was the usual excitement of receiving a treat - and then i set it before them outside.

They both looked up at me with utter disappointment, the kind of disappointment that said: we thought you were giving us human food.

In school we were taught the difference between poison water holes in the desert was insects. If the water is good, there will be insects about it, if its bad, there will be no insects.

So I left the mashed potatoes sit there for 3 days. Not a bird, not an insect, not a curious ant, not a dog, or a cat went anywhere near the 'mashed potatoes'. And there was no mold growing on it either.

I have no idea if they used a different recipe in Australia and it was a number of years ago, but whatever was in there, it was not real food.

I'm interested in food because we all need to eat. And as they say, you are what you eat.
